Binghamton is home to the AHL Binghamton Senators who
play in the Broome County Arena. The Binghamton Mets,
a Class AA minor league baseball team in the Eastern
League, began play in 1992. The Mets play in NYSEG Stadium
one of the nation’s most modern and scenic minor
league ballparks.
During the winter, skiing is available at several locations
within an hour's drive. In addition, Binghamton boasts
a community symphony orchestra, a pops orchestra and
an opera company. Several civic theater programs offer
year round schedules.
Broome County is home to Binghamton University, a state
university center with over 10,000 students, which offers
extensive courses, theater, film society and prominent
visiting speakers. Binghamton University recently upgraded
its athletic programs to the
Division I level. In addition, Broome Community College,
a two-year school, offers many extension courses to
the community.
The technology industry continues to be one of our largest
growth industries. Edwin A. Link invented the first
flight simulator in Broome County. We are still home
to several simulation companies creating flight and
entertainment simulators.
Major employers in Broome County include United Health
Services, Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton University, Lockheed-Martin
and Universal Instruments.
